How Amplify Sparked My Journey in Thoroughbred Racing

By: Ryan Connolly

Amplify Horse Racing not only inspired me, but it also kick-started my career trajectory in the Thoroughbred industry through one of its very founders. I am incredibly fortunate to have been seated in the audience, listening.

I’m a second-year student at the University of Kentucky with a passion for building a career in Thoroughbred racing and contributing to the growth and future of this incredible sport. My ultimate goal is to make a lasting impact at my home track, Fairmount Park in Collinsville, Illinois.

After arriving in Lexington, I began immersing myself in the industry by running cards at the sales for a consignment and joining the UKY Horse Racing Club, where I learned from speakers representing every corner of the racing world.

In March 2025, I applied for the Keeneland Ambassador Program sponsored by Lane’s End—one of the industry’s most respected internship opportunities. Applicants were invited to attend a guest speaker event featuring past ambassadors who shared how the program shaped their professional paths. Among them was Annise Montplaisir, Amplify Horse Racing’s Executive Director and Co-Founder.

Annise shared how her journey began at the North Dakota Horse Park, where limited opportunities pushed her to create her own. She reached out to her local track, landing hands-on roles at Canterbury Park and Keeneland before being accepted into the prestigious Godolphin Flying Start program—eventually leading her to co-found Amplify Horse Racing.

Listening to Annise’s story was a turning point. I realized that, like her, I could take initiative with the resources available in my own backyard. I reached out to Fairmount Park General Manager Vince Gabbert via a cold email, expressing my interest in learning about racetrack operations. Vince and his team welcomed me with open arms, giving me an unforgettable summer immersed in the business of racing.

At Fairmount Park, I gained hands-on experience using InCompass Solutions, assisted with the entry process, and learned the roles of the clerk of scales, paddock manager, and placing judge, while collecting and analyzing race data. The experience was both educational and empowering, an immersive introduction to the industry I hope to serve.

Shortly after, I learned I had been accepted into the Keeneland Ambassador Program, where I could apply everything I’d learned in a world-class racing environment. Working alongside Keeneland’s incredible team, I experienced a culture defined by professionalism, excellence, and opportunity.

All these experiences at Fairmount Park, Keeneland, and beyond stemmed from one pivotal moment: hearing Annise Montplaisir’s story through Amplify Horse Racing. That moment planted a seed that continues to grow, shaping both my career and my commitment to the future of Thoroughbred racing.
