Delta Downs Opening Day

Opening in September 1973 under breeder Lee Berwick in Vinton, Louisiana, Delta Downs is a combined Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse track that now runs approximately 130 days of live racing annually, with fall-winter Thoroughbred meets and spring-summer Quarter Horse racing. The six-furlong oval includes chutes for 1 1/16 mile Thoroughbred and 5-furlong Quarter Horse starts, built on a sand-and-clay base over limestone. After a 2001 acquisition by Boyd Gaming, the facility was upgraded (including renovations after Hurricane Rita), and today it stages major races like the Lee Berwick Futurity, Firecracker Futurity, and formerly the Grade III Delta Jackpot Stakes and Delta Princess Stakes.
Its intimate size, elevated track apron, and proximity of fans to the track make for a distinctive up-close racing experience.
